Algebra I:

Algebra I is the first course in a series of math classes that you will take in high school. It will be followed by Geometry, Algebra II and possibly higher level classes after that depending on your career goals. Some of the topics we will discuss include:  writing equations, properties of real numbers, solving and graphing linear equations as well as linear inequalities, solving systems of equations, exponents and exponential functions, quadratic equations and functions, polynomials/factoring and data analysis.

Geometry:

Geometry is the course following Algebra 1 (pre-req).Topics include basic vocabulary and concepts of geometry, analyzing, defining, and applying relationships between lines and polygons, drawing geometric figures in a coordinate plane and justifying the properties of the figures, using theorems and postulates to determine similarity and congruence of polygons, analyzing properties of circles, analyzing properties of two-dimensional and three-dimensional figures, using trigonometric ratios to determine lengths and measures of segments and angles, and performing geometric constructions and designs.

Classroom Procedures:

Students must be on time to class. Students are expected to sit in their assigned seat and be prepared for class with all supplies they wish to use each day. Cell phones should be silenced and put away unless the teacher grants permission to use them in class. Students must be fully compliant with the dress code. It is expected that all students will always follow SHS’s policies and procedures. If you are assigned a detention, you must serve 15 minutes after school the next day.

Classroom Policies:

All classroom policies are school policies as described in our student handbooks that the administration provided. Please review these policies in detail. See pages 8, 19-20, 22-24, 40-42 specifically regarding these policies.

  1. Respect yourself and each other!
  2. Come to class and leave class prepared. (ie, writing utensils, HW, notebook)
  3. Be on time – we begin promptly at the bell. If you are late to class without a pass, you will have detention and a phone call home. A lateness greater than 5 minutes equals a class cut referral and you will be marked absent for that period.
  4. Adhere to school’s dress code. Anyone failing to fully comply will be immediately sent to the main office as per administration.
  5. Follow the 10/10 rule – no passes issued within the 1st and last 10 minutes of class. Only 1 pass/student to the restroom at a time.
  6. Must have a pass to leave our classroom – no exceptions. You cannot leave to obtain a pass.
  7. No electronic devices or headphones / earbuds. These must be silenced and put away as per administration. Refusal to put away will result in detention and a phone call home. Calculators are provided and phones are not needed.
  8. No food, gum, or drinks. (Bottled water is an exception). You may only eat during breakfast and lunch.
  9. Refrain from foul language - No foul or inappropriate language will be tolerated – you will be issued a detention and a phone call home.  (If you can’t say something nice, don’t say it at all.)
  10. Assignments are due the next day at the beginning of class unless specifically noted – Work may be turned in late for half credit.
  11. ALWAYS try your best – if you do, you will succeed!
  12. Earn PBSIS tickets by following the above rules!
  13. Take advantage of PBSIS tickets and win HW PASSES! Every 10 PBSIS tickets earned in my class equals a HW pass to use at any time during this school year!

Resources Online:

Check your email frequently! All resources/ information presented in class can be found on our google classroom. Assignments should be brought to class unless you are absent. No credit will be given to assignments submitted with no work shown.

Office Hours:

I will be available after school from 2:45-3:15 Monday through Thursday each week, except for holiday/short weeks. Please take time to visit my office hours if you are struggling with your work and need any help.

Grading:   *ALL LATE ASSIGNMENTS ARE HALF CREDIT*

  • 50 % - Assessments and projects (Tests will 2x the weight as Quizzes)
  • 25 % - Classwork and Homework
  • 25 % - Participation, Math Binder, and Attendance

Revised Test-Retake Policy:

Students will be allowed to retake any test or quiz if all assignments are up to date. Homework assignments are the necessary key to successful performance on assessments. If a student has not completed all homework assignments, those must be completed before any retake will occur. Once all assignments are up to date, a “Request to Retest” form must be completed and turned in to be considered for a retake.  Retakes will occur before or after school only – plan accordingly.

Absence Policy:                     *Absences are taken very seriously*

When you are absent you must:

  1. Get the notes from our google classroom – all notes and assignments are posted daily after class/school.
  2. Get help with anything you don’t understand. (I will have office hours after school for additional help and tutoring if needed. You can also email, text, or face-time classmates if I am unavailable).
  3. Be ready to take any make-up quiz/test when you return. You can take the missed test or quiz during class or after school. Failure to make up a test or quiz will result in a zero in the gradebook until it has been completed.
